8 do's, don'ts and what to expect when using a powder clay mask for the first time.

If you’ve ever purchased an already mixed clay mask from any store, you might have experiences some burning and maybe you had a bad experience. Those masks most likely have alcohol in them and harsh chemicals that should not go on sensitive skin.

However, we really hope you won’t give up on clay masks (because they’re amazing) and will instead try a dry clay mask (or powder) that you mix at home. You can simply mix them with water, or you can customize them based on how much time you have and your skin type. But I’ll give you more advice and ideas on that at the end of the article! Now let’s focus on the do’s and don’ts!

Do apply the mask on clean skin. Even though the clay will absorb impurities from your skin, I recommend you either use a gentle face exfoliant before, or wash your face like you regularly would (or rather should) at the end of the night.

Do avoid contact with eyes. Apply evenly, so that it all dries at the same time.

Don’t forget about the neck area! Especially if you have a little extra time and you’re planning on hopping in the shower after, for an easier rinse. I’ve even used it on my back, and I loved it!

Don’t let the mask dry all the way. You do not want it to reach the flaky dry stage. When it starts drying (gets lighter in color) but still feels sticky, it’s time to wash it off. The mask extracts impurities out of your skin. If you let it dry too much, it will also extract moisture out of your skin. Now we don’t want that!

And remember, tingling is perfectly normal!

Do gently wash mask off with warm water and finish with cold water. You can always use a small bath towel, wet it and use it to wash off the mask. I’ve learned that even wetting my palms and then my face makes an easier removal of the mask. Make sure you do that over the sink or in the shower, to not have extra cleaning after.

Do expect some redness afterwards. Clay brings blood to the surface of your skin while absorbing impurities. Don’t freak out! It will go away in 10-20 min and you’ll be all ready for that party, date, or night in with your favorite show.

Do wait up to 20 minutes to moisturize, if time allows it. Give your skin some time to breath, but definitely give it some moisturizing love afterwards. Our Botanical Gold Facial Serum is the perfect after-a-clay-mask moisturizer.

Don’t forget to tell yourself that you are beautiful and deserve to make time for yourself. Sometimes that means taking a vacation, or reading a book you’ve had on your nightstand for months, and sometimes it means simply taking 15 minutes to give your skin a little detox.

We’ve also collaborated with local ceramist Faye , from Grit and Luster Ceramics, to bring you these cute little bowls for and easier mixing of the mask. The set comes with a bamboo brush, for an easier application. Don’t think that you can’t do it without! Use any small bowl or cup that you have, or even the lid from your clay mask jar (just make sure it’s completely dry when you put it back on) and your fingers to apply the mask.

The bowl+brush set will just make application a little easier and plus it looks so cute on any bathroom shelf!

Have you tried any of our powder clay masks? Which one do you like most?
